The Fuji-Xerox P880 print engine was first introduced in the Apple LaserWriter 8500 laser printer in August 1997. The first Adobe Postscript 3 laser printer, the LaserWriter 8500 offered wide-format, full bleed printing and a 20 ppm engine speed.
In April 1998, IBM introduced the Infoprint 20, the company's first workgroup printer with the Infoprint branding. The Infoprint 20 was based on the same Fuji-Xerox P880 print engine but offered new paper handling features, two new print resolution modes, and new software and controller features.
The all-in-one cartridge design was typical Fuji-Xerox, and similar to the Xerox DocuPrint N32. Its microfine toner is magnetic, mono-component, with a weight of 640 grams and an OEM page yield of 14,000 pages at 5% coverage. The cartridge is mechanically easy to remanufacture, separating into hopper and waste bin sections. These sections are held together with two cartridge pins.
